Guppies – Why? Magic?

February 28, 2010 by admin

I recentley bought 1 male guppy and 3 females.
Soon after we transfered them into are cycles, spacious 15 gallon tank, the male started to chase the females. They have this tank all to themselves…
One of my females has the darkest gravid spot ever. Small but black, really black.
Is she pregnant? Does she have to be fat to be pregnant?
She is about 2-3 cam in length.
The male has also stopped chasing them, why?
He is very healty and they all stay together. Could he be protecting them…
Also: My guppy always changes colour. In the morning his plae blue, when I come back from school, he is sparkling green and yellow. He looks like a completely different fish, why?
It happens everyday. The females are ok, its just him.
I turn the lights off before I go to school, come back ant 3:30 and then turn it on, he has gone green.
Is this normal, have I got a rare guppy.
My tank consists of, pump, filter, heater, fine gravel, 2 real plants, 2 fake plants, ornaments.

She is pregnant. Your best bet for keeping some of the fry is to put all your plants in one corner of your tank away from your filter. Put them as close together as possible. This will give the fry a place to hide.
A lot of people like to remove the pregnant guppy from the tank, but I find that this stresses them out too much and causes them to abort. She will probably have 30+ fry. Be aware that some of those will get eaten by your other fish, even the mom, but some will find their way to your plants and hide there.
As for feeding them, just finely crush some of their flake food and feed as normal. They will eat off of that.
As for the color, that is normal-

I used to breed fantail guppies and sell them. Your female is probably pregnant. Just as women, when they are first pregnant, aren’t fat – it happens gradually – so are fish. She will get fat as the baby guppies grow inside of her. You have to remember that a female’s eggs are inside of her, and as the sperm from the male fertilizes the eggs, they start to divide and grow into baby fish. I’ve seen guppies produce anywhere from 10 or 12 babies up to over 40 – or more.
Good to have lots of plant material around, as when she has those babies, they will need lots of places to hide, as guppies often eat their young. Not all do, and some have had this trait bred out of them, but some do.
You might check to make sure your water temperature is stable, and that the tank is cleaned with about 1/3 of the water replaced every few weeks.
As far as your fellow changing color, this could be temperature changes, lighting changes, or many other things. It wouldn’t hurt to get another male in there.
I’m going to refer a great book to you. It is called, “The proper care of Guppies” by Stan Shubel. This will tell you everything you need to know to have a healthy tank with beautiful fish – and the photos of beautiful guppies are absolutely spectacular!

    WOW! A color changing guppy?!
Although this is very rare – it can happen, just as some people’s eyes change color, or as other animals can change color.
I would consider myself very lucky!
Its sounds like your female could be preg. They usually get an attitude once they detect it. And yes, the male could be protective. Again, although it is rare, its possible.
Just keep an eye on the female. You will eventually get to where you go from questioning her pregnancy to knowing whether she is pregnant or not!! Their stomachs get very big!
If she is pregnant, and you want the little ones to have a better chance to survive you will want to either get a breeder cup, or some more plants and stuff for the babies to hide in (or both!).
Also, if you ant more and deeper answers I would take some informative pics to show what you are describing and take them to your local pet store. I work for pet co and people come in all the time with questions like this, but it is better, and we can better answer your questions if we have a visual of what you are talking about. People perceive things in different ways..
Good luck to you and your fishies!

Yes she is pregnant and eventually the male gets bored with her, ull have babies soon

Being guppies you can bet that they are all pregnant (except the male of course) they are the number 1 easy fish to breed as they don’t need anything special at all.
Can’t explain why he should be changing colours though.
