School Band- Percussion?

February 4, 2010 by admin

Our school’s concert bass drum is in pitiful condition. We had to color it with a Magic Marker before the last concert to make it all the same color (sorta). Any ideas on how to get enough $$$ to buy a new one, or anyone know a company that sells them for a decent price?

Is the shell in bad shape? If not, a simple recover would sufice. If the shell is still in the round remove all heads and hardware, use a fine sandpaper on the wood and edges, recover and put all the hardware back on. Spend some money to get really good heads and you should be in business. Plus it’s kind of fun to work and restore old drums. You never know what you have until it’s all apart.

Our school’s band used to had a stock of yard flamingoes and people would pay to have them “flamingo” other people. It works pretty well. Also, at a concert, have a band director spend 5 minutes talking about the need for a bass drum and then tell the audience that there is a fundraising jar going towards a new drum. It’s REALLY easy, and it works.

well at our high school, they have booths selling candy that they overprice to raise money, and tell them before the concert starts “we need money for a new drum, so buy candy”. or just tell them you need money and ask for a donation. or a car wash always works for my scout troop to raise money for scout camp or whatever.

Usually, for band instruments, you’ll want something local, so don’t look for company suggestions here. Try getting it from a local music store. As for the fundraising, get the whole band involved and come up with ideas, or ask your band instructor or even your principal what you can do to raise some money.

Try to earn some local support from businesses.
Our school actually does a car wash every year to raise money for our marching band. (I just graduated last month)
We also do the Shwan’s foods fund raisers and what not.
Have a parent donation box at the next concert perhaps too.
