Fanasy Fiction Book I Read, It’s Characters Search Out Magic Gems? Read More Details .?

The main character goes to a school and becomes a monk that trains to use the gemstones. I think it is about necromancy (not sure). He then travels by boat to a remote island to gather the stones after a show deposits them on the shore. Each type of stone has its own propertys.
