Ca. Golf Won’t Pass Smog, What To Do?

It’s a ’97 with 134,000 miles. It runs great with just a few quirks and a dent. It looks good with decent original paint and tinted windows, sun roof. The blue book for fair condition is $2200.
The check engine light came on some time ago and after way too many hours sitting around smog shops and a couple hundred bucks I decided to not fix it here in California, the land with the tough smog laws and instead go to a friends friend that owns a smog test only place for the “hook up”. Well I went yesterday am on my day off thinking it will take an hour or so and I could get to my to do list. I spent all freaking day there, reseting my computer and driving their magic 21 mile loop, which wasn’t so magic for me.
So today my clean smog certificate and registration is due and I don’t know what to do.
1. try for Ca. smog fail buy back program, if they accept the paperwork- $1000.
2. Take it to a smog repair shop- I really have fear of pumping a lot of money into this car that I won’t get back.
3. do nothing and buy a new car. I wont do this but am tempted to- I’m sure I’ll start getting tickets after the reg expires in two weeks as I park on the street.
