X/1999 (1992)- A classic CLAMP series. Slight shonen-ai, but the apocalyptic theme makes it bothe interesting and different.
Yu Yu Hakusho (1990)- Both hilarious and clever. It appeals to boys because of the awesome fight scenes, and girls because of the various pretty boys who pop up.
Vagabond- Classic samurai epic. 'Nuff said there.
Cowboy Bebop- Clever, with a good blend of comedy, tragedy, sci-fi, and great character development.
Gundam- I'm not talking about the latest series, I mean THE original Gundam. Art is a bit shaky, but the plot and characters are interesting.
Tokyo Babylon- Prequel to X/1999. More pretty guys, and great art by CLAMP.
Descendants of Darkness- I know, I know, it's kinda shonen-ai-ish, but the characters and plot are great, and the smatterings of comedy and tragedy make it interesting.
Black Jack- Classic. Absolutely classic.
Sailor Moon- The classic girl's anime series. Trying watching it again, and I promise that it's just as interesting as it was when we were only six
There are probably way more that I haven't put on this list, but you get the point. If these hadn't been created, a lot of the manga that we enjoy lately probably would be way different.
I also realize that there are more than five here, but it's so HARD to narrow it down to only five.

1. Dragon Ball -- It's a classic. Even though now if I see it again, I'll be like what was I thinking? LOL
2. Sailor Moon -- I'm a gal and a gal always have a Magical Girl phase when they're younger and no I will not reveal my age!!! LOL
3. City Hunter -- Hilarious! I remember LMAO everytime I read the manga. Not really a fan of the anime tho. It started at 1985 but I didn't watch it that early. I'm not that old.
4. Mari Chan series by Kimiko Uehara-- I was young and naive...I love ballet too so...LOL
5. Doraemon -- My Sunday morning routine back home always started with Doraemon instead of church. LOL
^_^
NB: That brings back a lot of memories! Thanks
